The government yesterday launched the latest phase of its green bus strategy, announcing that £5m has been made available to fund projects designed to reduce air pollution from local buses.

Transport Minister Norman Baker confirmed that local authorities will be able to bid for up to £1m in funding from the Clean Bus Technology Fund, allowing them to upgrade current fleets to reduce air pollution.

"This £5m scheme will help clean up emissions from older buses in some of our most polluted urban areas," he said in a statement. "It will lead to real improvements in air quality on some of our more polluted streets, as well as helping stimulate jobs and growth in the bus and retrofit industries. In addition, it will give British companies the opportunity to market new technologies to overseas bus operators and governments."

The government is under mounting pressure to tackle poor air quality, particularly in London where ongoing legal action is challenging the UK's failure to meet EU targets.

Baker stressed that "improving air quality is important for the coalition government", while the Department for Transport highlighted how the latest £5m funding is part of a long-running strategy to accelerate the rollout of green bus technologies.

It said that the new funding would be provided in addition to the £12m that was announced last month to support the introduction of more than 200 new green buses, and would complement existing plans to upgrade 900 London buses to tackle air pollution.
