IKEA has announced the solar energy system installed at its Charlotte, N.C., store is now operational. The company says the approximately 1 MW photovoltaic system represents its 39th completed solar project in the U.S., where 90% of its locations now have solar power.

IKEA contracted with Gehrlicher Solar America Corp. to build Charlotte's 122,000-square-foot PV array consisting of 4,228 panels. The company expects the system to produce approximately 1.33 GWh of electricity annually.

IKEA says it owns and operates each of the solar PV energy systems atop its buildings - as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement - and globally has allocated $1.8 billion to invest in renewable energy through 2015. The company says it has installed more than 250,000 solar panels on buildings worldwide, and owns and operates approximately 110 wind turbines in Europe.
