The demand for solar energy in Asia is increasing and so are the production quantities of large module manufacturers. Trina Solar Ltd., SunPower Corp. and JinkoSolar Holding Co. are seeing an increase in their sales and are thinking about increasing their production capacity.

According to a report in Businessweek, Trina expects an increase in deliveries from 2 GW to 2.4 GW this year. In the second quarter, the company shipped 647 MW of modules, which is 54% more than last year. With sales figures like this, the company needs to think about an increase in production capacity, says Chief Financial Officer Terry Wang: “We can increase our production output a bit more, but sooner or later we will have to think about how we can expand our capacity.”

Jinko is also benefiting from the strong demand in Japan and China and made a profit for the first time since 2011. Ninety per cent of their production capacity is being utilised. Chief Marketing Officer Arturo Herrero is afraid there might be supply shortages: “Our order books are almost full through October. It would be nice if we had a few more megawatts of production capacity.”

SunPower, which is also at full capacity, is planning to increase their production capabilities, among other things by expanding their joint venture with AU Optronics Corp. (better known under the brand name BenQ Solar).
