Government–Industry Study Sees Up To 1.6 Million Fuel Cell Vehicles On UK Roads By 2030

There could be up to 1.6 million fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) on UK roads by 2030, with annual sales of more than 300,000. This is the forecast made in the first public outcome of the UKH2Mobility public–private partnership. An interim report, published today at the end of the project’s first phase, finds that 10% of new car customers will be receptive to FCEV when first introduced  and that an initial rollout of 65 hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) in heavily populated areas and along national trunk routes would provide sufficient coverage for these early vehicle sales.

Hydrogen should be cost-competitive with diesel immediately, with 60% lower CO2 emissions than diesel by 2020; as the fuel mix becomes more renewable this improves to 75% lower by 2030 and would be on course for 100% by 2050. As vehicle sales grow, the number of refuelling sites would increase to 1,150 by 2030; by that time 51% of the fuel mix should be coming from water electrolysis, contributing to an annual total vehicle CO2 emissions reduction of up to three million tonnes by FCEV in 2030. FCEV could have a market share of 30–50% by 2050.

The total financing needed to bring an initial network of HRS to the UK and to support it in the period before it can become financially self-sustaining is estimated at £400 million to 2030. Phase 2 of the UKH2Mobility project will focus on reducing this figure, considering different models for delivering it, and developing a business case and specific actions for project participants to commit to.

UKH2Mobility’s members include: The Department for Business Innovation & Skills (BIS), the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC), the Department for Transport (DfT), Daimler, Hyundai, Nissan, Toyota, Air Liquide, BOC, SSE, Morrisons, Intelligent Energy, ITM Power, Johnson Matthey, and the New Energy World EU Industry Grouping.

Business Minister Michael Fallon said: “The transition to ultra-low emission vehicles has already begun. It has the potential to create really significant new economic opportunities for the UK, to diversify national energy supply and to decarbonise road transport. The findings released today demonstrate that hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles can make a significant contribution to this.”

“Successful commercialisation of the technology will require Government to work in true partnership with industry. Our international rivals are looking to steal a march in this area and so UKH2Mobility recognises the importance of prompt action to ensure the potential benefits are realised by businesses and consumers in the UK.”

“We already have a strong automotive sector and must ensure it stays that way. Opportunities for the UK to take a leading role in low carbon technologies will be looked at as part of our auto industrial strategy, published later this year.”
