Ballard has announced it has received an extension from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC) to continue its work in developing fuel cell power modules for buses. This latest project extension amounts to $2 million (CAD) and the funding will be used to standardise production of certain parts and optimise the balance of plant. It is hoped this will further reduce the cost of Ballard’s FCvelocity™-HD6 fuel cell power module as well as making it easier to manufacture. SDTC began funding this technology in 2010, investing $4.8 million (CAD) which was used to lower costs and improve the reliability of fuel cells in this application. The fuel cell bus fleet in Whistler has been a notable beneficiary of these technological improvements, amassing more than 1.7 million miles since entering service in 2010.
