Isofotón Expands Solar Activities In Kazakhstan And Honduras

Embarking on the next stage of its internationalization path, Isofotón has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to develop photovoltaic projects and a polysilicon facility in Kazakhstan; and an agreement to install a 150 MW project in Honduras.

Under the Kazakhstan MOU, signed with the Lancaster group, Isofotón's plans include the installation of photovoltaic plants and a polysilicon production facility in the country, which will serve the Central Asian markets.

Meanwhile, under a separate agreement with the government of the Republic of Honduras, the Spain-based photovoltaic company has unveiled its intentions to build a photovoltaic plant with an initial capacity of 150 MW. Work is scheduled to begin by the end of 2013. When complete, it is expected to generate enough energy to supply up to 140,000 households.

Both the Kazakhstan MOU and Honduras agreement are said to represent a key step in reinforcing Isofotón's international presence.

Unusually, the company could not divulge any more project details at this time. A spokesperson for Isofotón told pv magazine that more information will be available in the coming weeks regarding Kazakhstan, however.

They could also not provide an update on the insolvency rumors currently circling Isofotón. Despite the negative press, however, the company has been ploughing on with its photovoltaic plans, the most recent of which include the installation of a 150 MW project in Mexico. Overall, it has a pipeline worth 1.5 GW, which it intends to execute over the next two years.
